I’m sorry. I couldn’t resist.

Wow.

had an interesting observation about tonight’s episode of Heroes.

Christopher Eccleston and Eric Roberts sharing a scene. The first time the Doctor and the Master have been seen together in 11 years.

…and it never even occurred to me at the time.

Weeding out your bookshelves

Trying to clear space on our bookshelves, to minimize the number of new bookshelves we need to buy for our new library (yes, it’s so cool to have a house with an actual room in it designated as “the library”), I’ve developed a multi-tiered system for weeding out books.

At each phase, go through every book you can find, and ask yourself that phase’s question. If the answer is “no,” then the book goes in The Box.

(1) Do you have another copy of the book?
(2) Did you even open the book? (Too many books don’t pass this phase for me, sadly)
(3) Did you make it past the second chapter?
(4) Did you enjoy the book?
(5) Do you see yourself ever reading this book again?
(6) Do you see yourself ever reading this book again, and enjoying it?
(7) …enjoying it as much or more than the first time?
(8) Is this a book you want them to find on your shelves when you are dead?

I’m at phase 6 right now. I hope to have enough room before I get to phase 7.

BTW: If anyone here would like, I’ll post the contents of The Box in a day or two. We’re going to haul them to the local used book store, and what they don’t take will be donated to the local library. However, since we want to make sure that books end up in hands that will appreciate them, I’ll let people on my LJ claim any that they want.

Up on the airplane, nearer my God to Thee….

Reading about our friend Darryl () and his upcoming business trip to India, and thinking about Jeffe’s (‘s) upcoming nuptuals, got me thinking about travel again.

On a whim, I went to Orbitz today. For us to fly to Detroit for Jeffe’s wedding would cost us about $300.00 each. It’s a 10 hour drive. We have Sirius and iPods for the car. I think we’ll drive.

Then I started wondering.

I remember when I went to Europe in 1984, it was nearly $1,500.00 (in 1984 dollars, mind you) for airfare. According to Orbitz today, a flight to London and back at an unspecified time in, say, November, is now only $541.00 each.

It’s tempting. I’ve wanted to go back to London for ages. Maybe next year.

Fan video for Tom Smith’s “A Boy And His Frog”

Appropriate to see this online (from too many LJFs to list) the day that I unearthed my old Sesame Street LP with “Green” from the muck in the basement at the old house.

Fans of The New Adventures Of Queen Victoria have something big to look forward to. I can’t say anything more about it right now, but hopefully will have some good news to pass along shortly.

So why can’t GM produce hybrid cars today?

Look at this ad. It’s promoting GM’s amazingly innovative vehicle, the Stirlec 1, “an electric car that creates its own electricity!” It got somewhere in the neighborhood of 84 miles to the gallon. Then look at the date the ad ran in Car Craft magazine.

That’s right. GM announced a hybrid vehicle the month I was born. This technology has been around my whole life. So why can’t GM put out a real hybrid car now, when the environment, the price of gas, and the “free market forces” all demand one?

Hey, <lj user=”miskosmind”> and <lj user=”bfirrera”>

There is hope!

Observation

I had forgotten how great the smell of rising and baking bread is as it wafts through the house.

The one thing I can stand in this new house is the kitchen. I have room to work, and functioning appliances and tools to work with. Nice.

Today’s “Frazz.”

Be sure to read the last baloon in the last panel very carefully and very slowly. Reading it first thing in the morning with blurry eyes might lead you to substitute a similar word which also fits the punchline, but would not be otherwise appropriate.
